What is Zaleplon Used for Treating?

There are several Zaleplon indications, but as we mentioned before, it is primarily used to treat insomnia. There are three main types of insomnia, which are defined as the following:

  • Sleep-onset insomnia - this means you have difficulty falling asleep at night. Typically, the time taken before you fall asleep is longer than 30 minutes, however it may be several hours.
  • Sleep-maintenance insomnia - this is when you have difficulty staying asleep throughout the night. It could be that you wake up in the middle of the night, either once or several times, or that you wake up too early and cannot get back to sleep.
  • Transient insomnia - this is a type of insomnia which is due to a disturbance in the sleep-wake cycle, such as shift work or jet lag.

Insomnia can be acute or chronic, with the former lasting three months or less and the latter lasting for more than three months. To be characterised as a sleep disorder, the symptoms of your insomnia will have to affect you for three or more days per week. Of the three main types, sleep-maintenance insomnia is the most difficult to treat. Luckily, however, it is the least common.

Insomnia can be caused by a variety of factors; it may be a primary or secondary condition. A primary condition means that this is the main disorder, and it is not caused by another health condition, whereas a secondary disorder would be caused by a different or underlying health condition. If your insomnia is caused by another disorder, then it may resolve if you can find suitable treatment for that. Some common causes for insomnia include:

  • Stress - for example an important upcoming event such as an interview or exam
  • Mental health problems - these could include depression or anxiety
  • Environment - for example sleeping in a room that is too hot or too cold
  • Sleep hygiene - including using your phone in bed or going to sleep at different times
  • Medication or substances - including too much caffeine or alcohol

Everyone will have experienced insomnia at one time or another, and if you occasionally cannot get to sleep, this is not usually something to worry about. If it is becoming more of a problem or occurring more frequently, then you may want to think about treatment. We are going to explain some of the Zaleplon benefits as well as alternatives to medication shortly.

How Do Zaleplon Tablets Work?

The Zaleplon mechanism of action is similar to that of other Z drugs and benzodiazepines. Despite not being a benzodiazepine, the Zaleplon active ingredient targets the gamma-aminobutyric acid-benzodiazepine (GABA-BZ) receptor complex in the brain. The medication interacts with the central nervous system which is comprised of the brain and spinal cord. The neurons (nerve cells) connect the central nervous system to the peripheral nervous system throughout the rest of the body, and they transmit information using electricity.

The neuronal activity is regulated by chemicals called neurotransmitters which can be either excitatory or inhibitory. Excitatory neurotransmitters increase electrical activity, while inhibitory neurotransmitters reduce it. The structure of the neurons themselves consist of a cell body, with dendrites at one end, and a long process called an axon extending from the other with the axon terminal at the end. Electrical impulses travel down the axon to the axon terminal, and there is a miniscule gap called a synapse which is where the impulse travels over to the dendrites of the next neuron.

The synapse is where most GABA-BZ receptors are situated, and the active ingredient in the medication binds these receptors to exert its effects. When Zaleplon binds to the GABA-BZ receptors in the brain, it stimulates the production and secretion of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA. As GABA has hypnotic and anxiolytic properties, this means it subdues certain electrical signals in the brain, leading to relaxation and sedation. These sedative properties allow you to fall asleep when you are experiencing symptoms of insomnia.

How Long Do Zaleplon Tablets Last?

The Zaleplon duration of action is much shorter than other sleeping tablets with a similar mechanism of action. It is known as an ultrashort-acting sedative hypnotic. After ingestion, the active ingredient is absorbed rapidly by the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, however this absorption rate will vary slightly depending on factors such as your body mass index (BMI), metabolism, and whether you take the medication with food.

People with higher BMIs may notice the effects of the medication take longer to work, while those with low BMIs may feel the effects very quickly. If someone has a high metabolism, the effects of the medication will be felt more rapidly compared to someone with low metabolism. Taking medication with food may also slow the absorption rate, but it should not alter how much of the medication is absorbed. Overall, however, the Zaleplon onset of action typically occurs within 5 to 15 minutes after taking it, which is much faster than other Z-drugs or benzodiazepines.

For most people, the Zaleplon elimination half-life is 1.5 hours, so you should be able to feel the effects for about 3 hours on average. The short onset and duration of action make this an ideal treatment for sleep-onset insomnia, however, there is less evidence for how well it treats sleep-maintenance insomnia. The short duration of action has additional benefits; as it is eliminated from your system so quickly, it is much safer to drive or use machinery the following day as long as you do not take it less than 12 hours before you need to be alert.

Zaleplon Dosage for Seep

The dosage instructions and strength of the medication with vary between individuals depending on the type of insomnia you have, the frequency of symptoms, and the severity of your condition. In terms of strength, Zaleplon 10mg is the typical starting and maintenance dose, however this can be altered as necessary. As this type of medication causes increased tolerance, it is always best to start on the lowest possible dose. This is because you will either not benefit to the same extent as time goes on or you will need to increase your dose for the medication to be as effective.

The lowest dose available is 5mg, and while this has been shown to be less effective for the treatment of insomnia, it may be indicated if you take other medications which interact with this one, or you have a condition which is contraindicated. Zaleplon 20mg is the highest available dose, and may be indicated if you have severe insomnia, or if the standard dose of 10mg is no longer effective.

Zaleplon tablets should be swallowed whole with a glass of water, just before you want to go to sleep. It is very important that you do not crush the medication in any way, and you should only take it orally. This is because if the medication is crushed into a powder, too much could enter your system at once which could be dangerous and cause adverse effects. As we mentioned before, Zaleplon causes increased tolerance, and it has habit forming properties, so it should ideally be used as a short-term treatment option.

Zaleplon Side Effects

All medications have the potential to cause side effects, and before you buy Zaleplon it is important to be aware of any that may occur. This medication has a low incidence of side effects, which means most people do not experience any at all, and for those that do they are usually mild. Some of the more common Zaleplon side effects include the following:

  • Drowsiness
  • Nausea
  • Decreased appetite
  • Dry mouth

The above side effects usually resolve on their own and most and can be managed by staying well hydrated. If you feel sick, you can ask your GP for an anti-emetic. It is uncommon, but some people experience severe side effects. If you experience any of the following you should stop taking the medication immediately and seek professional advice:

  • Hallucinations or delusions
  • Amnesia
  • Difficulty breathing

Again, this is very uncommon, but some people who take Zaleplon can experience potentially life-threatening sleep behaviours, such as getting up and driving or cooking food. Some people also sleep-walk, have sex, and make phone calls. All of this happens without being fully awake, and most people do not remember they have done it.

Who Should Avoid Zaleplon?

Zaleplon is safe for most people aged 18 and over, however there are certain groups who should avoid taking it. You should get advice from your GP before you buy Zaleplon if any of the following applies to you:

  • You are allergic to any of the ingredients
  • You have a history of sleepwalking
  • You have obstructive sleep apnoea
  • You have severe liver or kidney problems
  • You have been treated for addiction in the past
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding

It may still be safe for you to take a lower dose if any of the above applies to you, with the exception of being pregnant or breastfeeding, but you will need to seek professional advice before you do so.

Zaleplon Alternatives

There are a variety of Zaleplon alternatives on the market, including Zopiclone and Zolpidem. They all have a similar mechanism of action and main difference between them is the duration of action. Zaleplon has the shortest duration of action which makes it ideal for sleep-onset insomnia, whereas the longer duration of action of Zopiclone for example, makes it a better choice for sleep-maintenance insomnia. One of the Zaleplon benefits is that it is associated with lower rates of rebound insomnia compared to other hypnotic sedatives, which makes it a popular choice for those with acute insomnia.

More About Zaleplon for Insomnia

Clinical trials which researched the efficacy of Zaleplon for sleep-onset and transient insomnia found that it was significantly more effective compared to a placebo. For a medication to be licensed it must undergo 3 phases of double-blind placebo-controlled trials to ensure the benefits outweigh the risks, and that it is safe to use. Living with effects of insomnia can negatively impact your quality of life and overall wellbeing, and medication such as Zaleplon can be an effective method to get your life back on track.
